Learning a new language using military technique

Can I do it?

I have a list of languages I want to learn but language learning can be difficult and boring. Back in my childhood, I took French and Spanish. However, I was so awful at speaking that my French teacher told me to never speak French again (yes, I was horrible and his statement was burned into my brain).

I felt so bad and unmotivated that I stopped learning even though I understood most of what people say when they spoke French or Spanish. I was shocked when, a few years ago, I met a French Turkish woman and her kids. When she spoke French to them, I understood most of the words she was saying even though I haven’t spoken or studied French in YEARS.

Now, I’m 39 years old. I have a bucket list of languages I want to learn. I was always good at reading, writing, and translating French and Spanish. Speaking has always been a sore point in my life. Also, I get stuck in lower intermediate level. I want to be advance in all languages I learn.

It’s never too late to learn something new. Today, YouTube algorithm recommended a video to me that I found intriguing.

Military language learning technique

The video is titled “Learn a Language in 30 Days with the Military Language Method”

The gist of the video talks about approaching language learning: Structure, Conversation, Muscle memory, Personality.  I don’t want to confuse my readers so I advise you to watch the video for more information.

Can I use this technique to learn Dutch?

Dutch is a language I literally never heard spoken before. I have to go look up a YouTube video after publishing this blog post. Right now, I’m thinking about moving to the Netherlands and need to learn Dutch. I have been told that most Dutch people already speak English so the move shouldn’t be so difficult but I prefer to learn the language to fit in even better. Plus my kids will have to learn Dutch for their schooling as well.

So starting in 2025, I’ll try this method and document my progress either on this blog or on my YouTube channel (maybe I will do both blog and YouTube for those who don’t watch videos).
