I don’t have many hobbies other than reading and researching. While I do enjoy learning and reading, I want to step outside of those things and challenge myself.
Not many childhood hobbies
Growing up, art and hobbies wasn’t a focus of my upbringing. I grew up in foster care so my third foster mom was very focus on making sure I didn’t end up in poverty or a similar lifestyle as my biological parents. Reading was fundamental. She would drop me off to the public library during the summer, made me read a whole set of encyclopedia and made sure I read the Bible cover to cover. At one point she made me read the entire dictionary that she had on the book shelf. LOL. I was probably the only student in the school I attended whose parent got stopped by the school’s librarian and told I was reading below my reading level. What can I say, I had a thing for Fear Street.
After that encounter, my foster mom made me stop reading Fear Street and started me on the classics. She would later buy the Harry Potter set (minus the last book because it came out while I was at university). She didn’t want me to learn how to cook, sew, knit or anything that would take me off the beaten path of success. Education was the focus. Science, math, French/Spanish, etc.
Sadly, while I was able to get into university, I dropped out around the 2008 economic crisis. I tried going back later but it didn’t work out. Still, I’m determined to make something of my life even if it’s the little enjoyment of picking up hobbies.
I was so focused on life that at 40 years old, there is a lot of things I want to learn. A list of things that I either didn’t have time to do or didn’t have the money to do it.
I feel that now is a good time to start crossing things off the list such as learning to cook, bake (I still can’t do a decent banana bread, lol), sew, knit (I have yarn and knitting needles I brought around the pandemic but haven’t used it), draw, drive (nope, I don’t know how to drive a car right now), and a whole host of other things.
My husband has been encouraging me to do calligraphy. He used to do calligraphy when he was younger but doesn’t do it anymore.
Wire Wrapping Jewelry
I’m not entirely sure if I would like to do this. I’m not even sure I’m artistically gifted like so many of the people within the wire wrapping jewelry niche but it’s worth a try to find out.

I have purchased copper wires, pliers, and beads. I’ve also subscribed to some YouTubers and visited the wire wrapping (and other similar) subreddits, blogs, and forums. I think I’m ready for this. Wish me luck.
